Fe Vesture began in a single room above a fabric merchant, with two people, one cutting table and a stubborn idea: that most wardrobes are full because nothing in them quite works. We wanted to make fewer things, better, and be able to answer any question a customer asked about them. Ten years on the studio is larger, but the rule has not changed.
We would rather make one good coat than ten passable ones.
Every season starts with cloth rather than sketches. We visit the mills, handle the rolls, and choose what we can actually get enough of before a single pattern is cut. It is a slower way to begin and it rules out plenty of ideas early, but it means nothing gets designed that we cannot make properly, and nothing ships in a fabric we would not wear ourselves.
Fit is decided on real bodies, not on a stand. Each style is worn for a full day by several people of different heights and shapes before it is signed off, and most come back for another round of changes. It is unglamorous work — moving a shoulder seam a centimetre, taking two centimetres off a hem — but it is the difference between a garment that photographs well and one you actually keep wearing.
Made by people we know, in places we visit.
We work with four workshops, three in Portugal and one in northern Italy, and we have worked with all of them for more than five years. We visit twice a year, we pay before delivery rather than ninety days after, and we do not move production to chase a lower unit price. If you want to know who sewed a particular piece, write to us and we will find out and tell you.
Nothing we make is designed to be replaced next season. Repairs are free for the first two years and charged at cost after that.
Our cloth is bought in full rolls rather than to order, which means occasional leftovers. Rather than write those off, they become the small runs you sometimes see appear without warning and disappear just as quickly. It is not a marketing exercise — it is simply what happens when you buy properly and refuse to throw good fabric away.
We are honest about what we do not do well yet.
We are not a sustainable brand and we do not describe ourselves as one. We make clothes, and making clothes uses resources. What we can say is specific: we know where every fabric comes from, we make in quantities we expect to sell, we repair what breaks, and we publish our factory list. Those are ordinary commitments rather than impressive ones, but they are ones we can actually stand behind when someone asks a direct question about them.
The shop is only part of what we do.
Both stores run a free alterations service, whether the piece came from us or not, and a repair counter that will take on almost anything short of a complete rebuild. We would rather spend an hour fixing a coat you already own than sell you a new one you did not need. It costs us money and we have never once regretted keeping it.
If something is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
Returns are open for sixty days, worn or unworn, with no explanation required. If a piece fails earlier than it should, we want to see it — not to argue about it, but because it usually tells us something about the pattern or the cloth that we need to know before the next run goes into production.
Everything here is made in small numbers, so styles do sell out and some never come back. We think that is a fair trade for making things properly rather than making them endlessly. If you are waiting on something, the list will tell you honestly whether it is returning or not, and roughly when.
